Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get started with the ALFAS program?
-Contact your home high school counselor.
Are the classes virtual?
-All courses are on a virtual platform, either Canvas or Plato and may or may not have a dedicated teacher, depending on the course selected.
Can I come to New Hope Education Center?
-ALFAS is a student-centered virtual program that requires a self-motivated, independent learner. ALFAS students can come into the building for assistance if they get approval from their facilitator. It is possible that attendance may be required for ALFAS participants in the future. Students would attend Monday through Thursday from 7:30-10:30.
How many classes can I take?
-ALFAS candidates are usually within 7 classes of meeting graduation requirements. A typical course load is 4 courses, but course loads are handled on a case-by-case basis that offers optimum success for each student.
Are Milestone End-of-course Tests required?
-The Georgia Department of Education requires Milestones to be given in 4 high school courses: Algebra I, Biology, American Literature, and US History. If you take one of these courses through the ALFAS program, you are still required to take the state-mandated Milestone at the end of the semester.
Can I keep my job?
-Many of our students have part-time and even full-time jobs while in the ALFAS program. The main thing to remember, however, is that you must attempt to work in your online courses at least 1 hour each day for each class to be successful and earn credits towards graduation. It is all about time management.
How do I know what to work on in my classes?
-Many classes have a weekly pacing guide that guides students through the content and assessments. As long as you follow the pacing guide or even work ahead, then you will be successful in the course.
How long do I have to work on my courses each day?
-It is recommended that students devote at least 1 hour per day per class. The goal is to stay on pace or work ahead.
I’m going to play sports in college. Are these classes NCAA approved?
-All new credit courses at New Hope Education Center are NCAA approved courses.
