About Poole Elementary

  • Lillian C. Poole Elementary was named after a tremendously gifted and devoted teacher. This is her story...

    Mrs. Lillian, as she was affectionately called by those who knew and loved her, started her teaching career at Willow Springs School in 1933.When several community schools were closed in order to consolidate, Mrs. Lillian began teaching first grade at Yorkville School when it opened in 1939.

    She was an inspiration to all her students and made everyone feel comfortable when they entered her school for the first time. She always had a smile on her face. She made school exciting and enjoyable and was gifted at bringing the best out of all her students, making them feel special. Her kindness and caring for others were most admirable traits not only as a teacher, wife, mother or neighbor but as a most trusted and respected person.

    After teaching for 37 years, Mrs. Lillian retired from teaching first grade at Yorkville School in 1969. She passed away in March, 1997 and these words are still spoken from those students she taught, her friends and everyone who knew her:

    "Successful is the person who has lived well,
    Laughed often and loved much;
    Who has gained the respect of children.
    Who left the world a better place than they found it,
    Who never fails to look for the best in others or
    give the best of themselves."
